SOUTHEASTERN BUCKAROO ASSOCIATION

The Southeastern Buckaroo Association-sponsored events encourage proper horsemanship, demonstrating the natural gaits associated with ranch work.

These events help riders to further their knowledge and develop skills in the traditional style of the Vaquero and Californios. Riders will also be able to exhibit their skills through the different events that are specific to this style of horsemanship.

Hacamore   SCOTT'S HORSEMANSHIP "TIPS":

"UNDERSTANDING THE BOSAL AND HACAMORE" - PART I

The term hacamore is used to refer to the traditional piece of equipment used by Vaqueros and Buckaroos, not the mechanical device found in modern tack stores today.  The traditional hacamore (or hackamore) consist of three pieces, the bosal, the hanger, and the mecate.

This article will cover the bosal.  The bosal is the piece of the hacamore that goes over the horses nose.  The material used to make the bosal varies.  Most bosals are made of rawhide.  Rawhide is cow hide, the same as leather.  The difference is in the way the cow hide is prepared.

Bosals are also made of latigo, or leather, and some are made from exotic hides such as kangaroo. There may also be a combination of rawhide, latigo, or kangaroo used to make a bosal.

Bosals have what is known as a core.  The core is not seen, but is used to braid the rawhide that is visible on the bosal.  The material used as a core also varies.  Twisted or braided rawhide is most commonly used, as is leather and different types of rope.  The core is the main factor in determining the pliability of the bosal, whether it is stiff or more flexible.

Next month we will talk more about the core of the bosal as well as the various diameters and lengths of a bosal.
