Horsemanship

SOUTHEASTERN BUCKAROO ASSOCIATION

The Southeastern Buckaroo Association-sponsored events encourage proper horsemanship, demonstrating the natural gaits associated with ranch work.

These events help riders to further their knowledge and develop skills in the traditional style of the Vaquero and Californios. Riders will also be able to exhibit their skills through the different events that are specific to this style of horsemanship.

Bridling   SCOTT"S HORSEMANSHIP "IIP" OF THE MONTH:

  "IMPORTANCE OF PROPER BRIDLING"

If we study the style of horsemanship the SBA promotes, we should be concerned with using proper technique when working with our horses.  This is very important when it comes to bridling our horses.

When putting the snaffle bit on our horses we should first think of the most comfortable way for the "horse".  By placing a thumb or finger in the corner of the horses mouth and rubbing the bars of the mouth and tongue the horse will soften his jaw and start to work his mouth in a chewing fashion.  If we're ready with the headstall and bit we can easily slip the bit in without banging our horses teeth.

Once the bit is in we can gently lift it with the headstall.  We should be particular about not letting the headstall bump the horse in the eye.  When going over the ears with the headstall gently push the ears FORWARD one ear at a time instead of just raking the headstall over the poll pinning the ears down on the poll.

Next, gently fix the horses mane and forelock so it's not wadded up under the headstall.  Buckle the throat latch leaving room for a finger or two between the throat latch and the bottom of the jaw.

Remember, horses ar not bad to bridle, but people are bad bridlers!

                                                           Happy Riding,

                                                            Scott Stokes
