The participant will receive credit not only for each obstacle completed but will also be judged on the horsemanship demonstrated at each obstacle. There will be a predetermined maximum time allowed but no credit is earned for completing the course with the quickest time; this is NOT a speed event.
2.Cow Sorting Cow Sorting is a two-man team event. The arena is divided into two sections with a central gate. The cows are numbered sequentially. The team enters the arena which holds the cattle and then a number is called. The team takes that numbered cow out of the herd to the empty section of the arena. The cows are then sorted in order to the other section of the arena. Points are earned by the number of cows properly sorted in order in the allotted time. No loping is allowed in the arena. 3. Ranch Horsemanship Class A. Drywork: The initial part of the event is designed for a rider to showcase the communication and willingness between the rider and horsewhile executing various maneuvers without a cow. Emphasis is placed on how quiet, relaxed, and respectful the horse responds to the rider. The focus will be on quality of horsemanship, not speed.
B. Cow Work: The second part of the event allows the rider to demonstrate his horse’s ability to execute horsemanship maneuvers while controlling the movement of cattle. The horse should handle himself in a controlled and respectful manner. The rider should demonstrate proper horsemanship techniques associated with the cattle handling. The object of the event is to control the cattle movement while maintaining the proper position by using proper horsemanship.
4. Ranch Roping Class Ranch Roping is a three-man, two-man, or one-man event. The three-man event is the most practiced event. The event consists of a header, heeler, and a ground man. The heard of cattle consists of no less than four cows (all distinctly marked). The team is given one cow to rope. One man heads the cow and one man heels the cow while the last man gets off his horse (placing his rope on the ground), tails the cow down and positions the ropes so that all four feet are controlled. No loping is allowed in the arena. 5. Ranch Cutting A single rider will sort a designated cow from the herd and show the ability of the horse to keep the cow out of the herd. Once control of the cow is established, the cow will be driven into a pen or through a given obstacle. Two herd holders will be allowed to help hold the herd. PARTICIPANTS AND GUIDELINES Nocive Class The class is based on the rider, not the horse. Events in the Novice Class will award prizes and points (no money). Participants can compete in the Novice Class until 50 points are accumulated in an event. The points earned in each event are a separate total. Novice participants may compete in no more than five Open events before returning to the Novice Class. A three-point participation penalty will be assessed for each event in which the rider participates. This total will be assessed to the Novice’s point total. Example: Three Open events 3 x 3 = 9 points If the Novice rider participates in the 6 th Open event, he can no longer ride as a Novice. No trainers or clinicians may ride as a novice (even on a green horse). Entry fee for individual class = $25.00 *The only Novice Ranch Roping Class will be a break away hondo class. Open Class Anyone can participate as an Open rider. If participating, trainers and clinicians must ride in the Open Class. After competing in six open events, a rider cannot return to the Novice Class. The Open Class will award monies and/or prizes to the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd places. 80% of the entry fees will be returned as prize money or winnings. The other 20% of the entry fees will be used by the Southeastern Buckaroo Association to help defer the costs of events. Entry fee for each Open Individual Event = $35.00. Entry fee for each Team Open Event = $30.00/individual. *In the two-man cow sorting event, a novice rider and an open rider may participate together, but only in the Open Class. (This event does count as one Open event for that novice.)
